CHAPTER TEN
I didn’t know who Toscano needed to call, but I didn’t see much of him the rest of that day, which was just as well because we were a very busy crew for the next several hours.
The press caught wind of what was going on around one p.m., and they showed up in a series of three separate waves.
Brice went over to coral them at a safe distance, and give a very limited statement about the investigation.
The dead body in the closet was taken away by the medical examiner who’d have to determine a cause of death. He’d been pretty fascinated by the fact that the body was in such excellent condition, and suggested that the dry heat of the Texarkana springs and summers had worked to preserve her body.
A bulldozer was also called in, along with several members of the Texarkana FBI bureau, and in short order, the shipping container was dug up, lifted above ground, and carted away to the crime lab.
We left the site at eight o’clock that night having collected most of the evidence inside the shipping container. We’d do a more thorough search of the house the next day after everybody had some rest.
“How’re you doin’?” Dutch asked me on our way back to the hotel.
I pulled my attention away from the window where I’d been staring out at the passing scenery, and took up my husband’s hand. I loved the feel of our hands intertwined. Mine felt so small encased in his. He had long elegant fingers, and if hands could be considered sexy—and I think they can be—his were a definite ten.
“I’m doing okay,” I told him. “How about you? How’re you doing?
He grunted. “Tired, but I’ll live.”
“Care to share what you guys found in the shipping container?” I asked next. I hadn’t been privy to anything the boys had collected, beyond what I’d seen on the monitor when Oscar and the others had gone inside.
He sighed. “We found some women’s clothing, a mattress with a fair amount of bodily fluid on it, and an arsenal of—”
Dutch caught himself midsentence.
“What?” I asked.
He frowned. “Do you really want to know, Edgar?”
I squeezed his hand. I knew there was nothing inside that container that wasn’t some kind of horrible nightmare. “It’s okay, Dutch. You can tell me.”
“Okay,” he said. “We found an arsenal of medieval torture devices.”
“Jesus,” I whispered.
Dutch nodded. “Yeah. It was bad, Abs.”
“He wanted them to suffer.”
“He did. A lot.”
My stomach muscles clenched and I felt a little queasy all over again. Dutch squeezed my hand and the unsettling moment passed. “Did you get a hit off that ID in the living room?” I asked next.
“Not yet. Brice put Williams on it to run it down.”
I made a face. Running down that lead was something any agent would’ve clamored for. It was likely the clue to identifying the killer, and therefore a prestigious assignment. “The new guy? Why give him a hot lead like that?”
“Because we’re a team, Abby, and that’s what teams do.
